January's Heavy Rotation Roundup
Here's my picks for what you should be listening to right now.

The Newbies:
1. Ring Ring by Sleigh Bells Seriously, listen to Sleigh Bells. They're going to be the next big thing, mark my words. Catchy, original and they'll probably stay true to their indie roots.

2. Crown on the Ground by Sleigh Bells Not as "commercial" as "Ring Ring" but a more unique sound.

3. Please Don't (feat. Santigold) by David Byrne & Fatboy Slim Santigold does justice to a song about world leaders from the perspective of Imelda Marcos.

4. Gold Rush by Basia Bulat Folksy song about heartbreak, and it's so quick it's like you're at a jig.

5. Ascending Melody by Dirty Projectors B-side that is as fun as "Stillness is the Move."
link
6. Trick Pony by Charlotte Gainsbourg Beck's special touch is evident in this song.

7. Salvation by Scanners Creepy, eerily good.

The Veterans: Most of these were on my Best of 2009 list, but if you haven't taken a hint, I love these songs so listen to them!
1. Ambling Alp- Yeasayer

2. Substitution- Silversun Pickups

3. Into the Mirror- Minus the Bear

4. Hell Fire- Yellow Fever

5. Generator ^ First Floor- Freelance Whales

The Hip Gnome is watching...

I just saw It's Complicated starring Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin and thoroughly enjoyed it.  It had gotten good reviews and award hype, so I hoped I would not be disappointed.  I wasn't.  It was better than expected and really funny.  I laughed more in this movie than I had in any other movie in a long time.  Streep and Baldwin (and also Steve Martin) act superbly and the storyline moves along quickly and doesn't get boring.  One of my favorite movies of the year.

Streep and Baldwin's characters are ex-married but rekindle an affair with each other at an inopportune time.  Baldwin being married to a younger woman and Streep pursuing a possible new relationship.  The "girl talk" Streep has with her girlfriends is hilarious and the family moments are also funny.  Streep and Baldwin's 3 children are almost too perfect, but John Krasinski's character adds humor to the scenes.

I loved the characters and story and probably could have watched 30 more min.  I would definitely recommend you see this movie!

Charlotte Gainsbourg's new album IRM was released on Tuesday. She's a French singer/actress with a famous musician father. The record was produced by Beck and he accompanies her on the song "Heaven Can Wait," which when I first heard, didn't think was all that special. However, I like her song "Trick Pony" a lot better and I enjoyed listening to her KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic set. If you don't have 41min, just listen to the first song or two of the set.  They're good.
FYI- “IRM” is the French equivalent of “MRI,” an acronym for magnetic resonance imaging

Those Aussies have good taste in music.  Topping Australia's Hottest 100 2009 Poll was Mumford and Sons' "Little Lion Man."  I recommended it if you like The Avett Brothers.  Also on the list is a fun song by Lisa Mitchell called "Coin Laundry."  The list is littered with my favorites, some that don't seem to reach the American audience as easily.

Broken Bells is the new collaboration between James Mercer (The Shins) and Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley).  I'm been listening to the song, "The High Road," and they've just released a video for it.

Also check out this Jamie Cullum cover of Rihanna's "Please Don't Stop the Music." It's music to my ears.

I used to watch The Pee-Wee Herman Show on Saturday mornings.  And if you haven't heard, Pee-Wee's back, doing a stage show in LA!  Paul Reubens in his trademark suit, the original Miss Yvonne, and even the original Jambi the genie return to re-create the mid-80's show.  The Playhouse is set for a month-long gig ending early Feb.  It's been getting good reviews from Entertainment Weekly and the LA Times, apparently bringing the nostalgia back, and less the controversy.

I'm a big fan of Dakota Fanning (go away Abigail Breslin). But I almost gasped when I saw my Dakota all grown up for her role in the Runaways, also starring Twilight's Kristen Stewart.  It's a biopic about Joan Jett and Cherie Currie opening in March.  Not sure if the movie will be any good but here's a new clip to watch.

Did you watch "Hope for Haiti" on Fri. night? It was one of the most widely distributed televised prime-time benefits in history. I thought the performances were strong and it was interesting to see all those celebrities come together (in one room). Below are two of my favorite moments.

You might not have known that Canada had its own telethon, "Canada for Haiti," in addition to airing "Hope for Haiti." They had performances by Nelly Furtado, Metric, Tragically Hip, and K'naan.

The Hip Gnome is listening to...

I was just listening to a college acapella version of "Sukiyaki" and was reminded of the interesting history behind this song.  It was originally a 1961 J-pop (Japanese-pop) song that was translated into English and became popular in the US.  A 1981 version by A Taste of Honey reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It has since been covered many times over, even in Spanish by Selena in 1989.

Here's the original sung by Kyu Sakamoto

Here's a 1994 version sung by 4 P.M.

After talking about song sampling in an earlier post, I think it's about time that this song gets revived in a hip hop/pop song.

I had never heard of this artist before.  Her name is Basia Bulat, she's from Toronto, and her second album Heart of My Own will be released Jan. 26th.  The first single, "Gold Rush," is a pretty good song.  She works that harp.  The most folksy song I've listened to in awhile.

I'm fascinated by David Byrne's new project with Fatboy Slim titled Here Lies Love to be released Feb. 23rd.  It's a concept album about the life of First Lady of the Phillipines, Imelda Marcos (the one with a lot of shoes), a dance opera of sorts.  The first single features Santigold (my fav) and is called "Please Don't" and is being released for free.  It's a great track (listen above).  There are other great artists on the project including Florence + The Machine, St. Vincent, Tori Amos, Cyndi Lauper, Róisín Murphy, Nellie McKay, and Sia.  I'm looking forward to its release and also very, very curious to learn about the life of Imelda Marcos thru song.

Beach House's 3rd album release Teen Dream is set to be released Jan. 26th.  I've been listening to a free stream and so far, it's okay.  My favorite song is probably "Norway", their first single, and a highly publicized song featured as an iTunes Single of the Week as well as being given away on the band's website for months.  There's an eerie accordion sound that streams along the background, like a broken piano.  The other songs are similar sounding and her voice starts to drone.  I found the album a bit too sleepy but I'll be interested to see if the album catches on.
