The Hip Gnome's Best of 2010

~Best 'Films' of 2010~
(that I saw)

Toy Story 3
The funniest and saddest movie of the year was a Pixar animated movie.  Go figure.  Pass the tissue.

Please Give
This movie had clever and witty writing that was completely refreshing.  Best comedy of the yearYet completely overlooked.

Rabbit Hole
This was the best dramatic film I saw this year, and despite the tragic subject, there was something touching, profound, and uplifting about the conclusion.

Name your top 3... please.

The Hip Gnome Recommends...
Looking for a good movie to watch over the holidays?
...
Rabbit Hole (Theaters)
Plot: Grieving parents deal with their son's tragic death, and that's pretty much it
Reaction: Testament to good acting, such a simple plot yet such a good movie.  Love the voice-over in the last scene.
Mood: Depressing (but makes you appreciate everyday)
When to Watch: When you feel like a good Nicole Kidman drama

Winter's Bone (DVD)
Plot: Girl has a sad poor life and looks for her deadbeat father (... and his bones)
Reaction: 20-year-old Jennifer Lawrence is really really good, she carries the movie... well deserved Golden Globe nomination
Mood: Somber, depressing, but good basic storytelling
When to Watch: Winding down for the night, snuggled on the couch
Exit Through The Gift Shop (DVD)
Plot: Documentary about graffiti/street art and an eccentric French filmmaker
Reaction: What is art?  I'm not so sure anymore.  Did not expect the movie to go in the direction that it did.
Mood: Funny, bizarre, pretty easy watch
When to Watch: While folding laundry on a Saturday afternoon

Black Swan (Theaters)
Plot: Ballet dancer has some mental issues (obviously)
Reaction: More nerve-racking than expected, hands in front of eyes a lot
Mood: Shocking, suspenseful, highly dramatic
When to Watch: During the day b/c you won't be able to sleep right after this one
The Town (DVD)
Plot: Town boys are bank robbers, FBI is on to them, scary nun masks
Reaction: Good crime action movie directed by Ben Affleck
Mood: Action drama- The Godfather meets The Departed
When to Watch: When you feel like an action flick with people who talk with thick Boston accents

RED (Theaters)
Plot: Retired CIA agent enlists his friends for help, including a paranoid conspiracy theorist
Reaction: It's like a funny cop drama, doesn't take itself too seriously
Mood: Comedy-action, based on a comic book
When to Watch: When you want to see Dame Helen Miran shoot a rifle and Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman pack a punch

The Hip Gnome's Best of 2010

Best Songs of 2010 (#1-5)
Here they are folks.  My 15 favorite songs of the year.  What were your favorite songs of 2010?

#15 All I Need by Christina Aguilera
#14 Easy to Love by The Jezabels
#13 Rolling in the Deep by Adele
#12 Please Don’t by David Byrne & Fatboy Slim feat. Santigold
#11 Thieves by She & Him
#10 Camera Talk by Local Natives
#9 When My Time Comes by Dawes
#8 Sex Karma by Of Montreal
#7 Becoming a Jackal by Villagers
#6 Bloodbuzz Ohio by The National

#5 Slippin'- Quadron
The repetitive rhythm of this song is really addictive.  It kinda makes you want to get up and dance, or at least sway back and forth.

#4 Blue Streak Mama- Frazey Ford
There is a soulful quality about Frazey's voice that makes this song so calming.  It's like you're transported to a rhythm and blues club for three minutes of pure bliss.

#3 White Blank Page- Mumford & Sons
There is something so beautiful and emotional about this song that I clung to this year.  I think this is Mumford & Sons at its best and hope to hear more like this from them soon.

#2 Young Blood- The Naked and Famous
This song is kind of like the good parts of Passion Pit's "Sleepyhead" and MGMT's "Kids" put together.  Her voice is perfect and the music is catchy.  One that I could listen to over and over again, and I did.

#1 Ring Ring- Sleigh Bells
Sleigh Bells was like a mighty storm this year.  Thanks in large part to "Ring Ring", a song that doesn't seem to fit with their others.  It's more calm and peaceful, not forceful and loud.  So even if the other tracks put people off, this one is a gem that everyone can agree upon.

The Hip Gnome's Best of 2010

Best Songs of 2010 (#6-10)

#10 Camera Talk- Local Natives
Local Natives' debut album was one of my favorites this year.  This song is one of their more upbeat and instrumental tracks.  It was their acoustic version for NPR that really got me hooked.  Check it out here.

#9 When My Time Comes- Dawes
This is a beautiful song that really gets good at the chorus.  This song has a real American folk feel that is like our version of Mumford & Sons.

#8 Sex Karma- Of Montreal
I'm a little embarrassed about how much I liked this song this year.  But maybe it was Of Montreal's strange live performance that really drew me into this song.  Of Montreal remains strange and wonderful.

#7 Becoming a Jackal- Villagers
It took me awhile to get into this song, but once I did, I really appreciated this seemingly simple song.  He channels the sound of Simon and Garfunkel in a way that is more reminiscent of a musical style from the past.  Love it.

#6 Bloodbuzz Ohio- The National
This song is a powerhouse song.  It has a powerful arrangement, a booming voice, and strong, beautiful lyrics.  Definitely one of the best.  Thank you The National.

The Hip Gnome's Best of 2010

Best Songs of 2010 (#11-15)
The time has arrived.

#15 All I Need- Christina Aguilera
This song was a hit with The Hip Gnome readers and me.  It won the blog's "Song Battle" for weeks and got inducted into the Song Battle Hall of Fame.  It's a beautiful song (co-written by Sia) and I only wish that Xtina's album Bionic was more reflective of this song and not the first single "Not Myself Tonight."

#14 Easy to Love- The Jezabels
The Jezabels are from Australia and have released 3 EPs to date, but no full length albums.  Each EP has been filled with at least one really memorable track.  This track is from their second album but definitely check out the rest.

#13 Rolling in the Deep- Adele
Perhaps I'm a bit premature since I've only been listening to this track for a couple of weeks but I just have a good feeling about it.  Adele's vocals are powerful and it's extremely catchy.

#12 Please Don't- David Byrne & Fatboy Slim feat. Santigold
David Byrne's concept album Here Lies Love was released earlier this year.  Unfortunately the album, which was chalked full of guest singers including Cyndi Lauper and Florence + the Machine, didn't seem to resonate with listeners.  But I thought that the single "Please Don't" was inventive and different.

#11 Thieves- She & Him
I didn't really get into this song until I saw it performed live.  Something about its quiet folksiness and catchy hook made it a frequent listen in my iTunes this year.

Eminem generously shared his SNL slot with Lil Wayne, so after Eminem sang his song, Lil Wayne took the stage to perform "6 Foot 7 Foot".  Eminem's back-up band jammed to Lil Wayne's pre-recorded track so well that you could hardly tell that they weren't needed.  Love their effort.

The Hip Gnome's Best of 2010

Best New Bands of 2010

The band Sleigh Bells definitely won the award for best breakout band in 2010.  What started as a memorable performance at CMJ Music Marathon in October 2009 resulted in them being signed to M.I.A.'s label and releasing their first album Treats this year.  Now you can't turn on the TV or radio without hearing their music.  Congrats Sleigh Bells!  You made it.

My favorite new band of 2010 is The Naked and Famous.  They're a young band all the way from New Zealand (4 guys, 1 girl).  Their song "Young Blood" knocked my sock off this year and they are starting to get some attention here stateside.  Their sound is fresh and energetic and I expect to hear more about this band in the upcoming year.

Another new band I really enjoyed this year was Bear Hands.  Their music is catchy and I hope they also find success in 2011.  Here's their song "Crime Pays."

The Hip Gnome's Best of 2010

Best Hip Hop and R&B Songs of 2010

Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie" made the best pop song list, but his "No Love" feat. Lil Wayne was a solid hip hop song.  Great use of sampling and just the right amount of rap angst thanks to Lil Wayne.

Yep, the music world loves Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.  And I agree, it has some musical gems on it.  Here are my favs.
Kanye West- "Gorgeous"

Kanye West- "Runaway"

B.o.B's new mixtape No Genre was released for free, but they were definitely not throwaways.  They seemed to be more genuine and natural to B.o.B's hip hop style than his more pop friendly album The Adventures of Bobby Ray.
B.o.B- "Feet Don't Fail Me Now"

B.o.B- "Attraction"

Mayer Hawthorne might not be the first image that comes to mind when you think about smooth R&B music but this song passes the test- "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out"

The official song of the recession, Aloe Blacc's song "I Need a Dollar" is super catchy.

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings brought back soul this year in I Learned the Hard Way.  Here's "100 Days."

The Hip Gnome's Best of 2010

2010 Teardrop Award

Slow, sad, beautiful songs are like comedies to the Academy Awards... they don't get the recognition they deserve.  They take more time to appreciate but they are often my favorites because of the emotions they are able to invoke.  Following in the footsteps of "Heartbeats", "Skinny Love", and "Kettering" are this year's most teardrop worthy songs.

Midlake- Acts of Man

Dry the River- History Book

Horse Feathers- Thistled Spring

Holly Miranda- Waves

The Hip Gnome's Best of 2010

Best/Worst Pop Songs of 2010
Music is supposed to be universal, right?

Best Pop Songs- These pop songs were winners in my book.  Super catchy from the get-go, being overplayed did not ruin them.  They were easy to sing to, dance to, and play on repeat.  Which pop songs were your favs?

1. Airplanes- B.o.B feat. Hayley Williams
2. Animal- Neon Trees
3. Breakeven- The Script
4. Love the Way You Lie- Eminem feat. Rihanna
5. Just a Dream- Nelly
6. What’s My Name- Rihanna feat. Drake

Worst Pop Songs- I did not enjoy these songs.  They were overplayed and got under my skin.  Usually the lyrics were so bad that the melody could not save it.  If you enjoyed these songs, feel free to convince me otherwise.  Which songs will you be glad are gone and forgotten?

1. California Gurls- Katy Perry
2. Hey Soul Sister- Train
3. Tik Tok- Ke$ha
4. Cooler Than Me- Mike Posner
5. Billionaire- Travie McCoy feat. Bruno Mars
6. My First Kiss- 3OH!3
